VARIATION AND SIMILAR SPECIES

Genetic variation occurs between the western and eastern populations. Western population with generally smaller pale blotches. Black background colouration of eastern population tends to fade with age, becoming more flecked with yellow or brown; western populations seem to retain black background colour. However, some larger western individuals may look similar to those of eastern populations. Similar in body form to the closely related scree skink (O. waimatense) but colour patterns differ markedly. Hybrid O. otagense–O. waimatense individuals occur in north Otago, appearing intermediate in morphology. Unlikely to be confused with other species as colour patterning is unique. Distinguished from grand skink (O. grande) by the presence of large pale blotches of colour on body (vs. short longitudinal striations).
